But if you want to explore--along with these flawed and interesting characters--the many permutations of an all-too-realistic situation, open this book and dive in! You won't regret it. Jun 22, Julie Hoffpauir rated it it was amazing. This was a great book, it really made me see that some men are absolute PIGS in the way they treat women. I was really over joyed at Josh for what he did to Ken, dude seriously well deserved it. Jun 24, Melinda rated it it was amazing. One of my favorite stand alone novels! I tend to lean toward series so I can see the character development from book to book.

This one had it all. I also don't usually care for flashbacks in books, or jumping from past to present, but this was so well done that I didn't eve3n really care! Definitely my top pick so far this summer!!!!

Jul 09, Rachel Benzine rated it it was ok Shelves: literature , adult. Interesting story that I unintentionally read in a day. I didn't love the characters - but I did appreciate that they were each flawed in their own way. Woods created an interesting portrayal of the ripple effects of one boy's crime on his family, his victims, and their families. Wonderful Sherryl Woods can tell an amazing story. She grabs your attention and your heart. Mothers and friends can relate to this gut wrenching dilemma and and see how you can come out on the other side.

Two families who are best friends face a struggle when the son of one of them is charged with rape of the daughter of the other family. May 31, Debbie rated it liked it. A dilemma between long time friends with a twist. This seemed very true to life and had me ripping right through it. Feb 24, Gay Ann rated it really liked it Shelves: The Deacon's Family series is filled with redemption, living with addiction and several topsy turvey events at the end.

I enjoy romance novels that have mystery as well as this one hit the mark. Emotional and compelling I pulled this book out every chance I could. There was every emotion imaginable and had inspiring characters. Great book! Mar 16, Karla rated it it was amazing.

Loved reading about the change in Luke. Mar 21, Mom rated it really liked it. Two moms, two daughters, and two sons are best friends and neighbors for years until one son, a star college football player, is arrested for date rape. Book raises a lot of questions about how one would deal with such a tragedy. Good book club pick. Dialogue a little stilted but plot line makes up for it.

A book about a difficult subject of rape. Feb 25, Marianne Jay rated it liked it. The premise of the book was really good. However, the characters really bugged me. Their lack of intelligence, good judgement, whining, and pure stupidity really bugged me. Jun 14, Laurie rated it really liked it Shelves: fiction-other. See a Problem?

Living next door to each other and having children the same age just made their bond stronger until the Carters face a crisis that sends shockwaves through them all. Evan Carter, the superstar athlete and all-American son, is accused of date rape. The Carters are shocked and their already Mending Fences was a well-written book that dealt with a difficult issue gracefully.

The Carters are shocked and their already tense marriage is strained further than ever. This leaves only Emily and Emily's daughter Dani for the Carter women to lean on. Dani has a shocking secret she is carrying though. Both Caitlyn and Dani know that this is not the first time Evan has done wrong. This leaves the young girls to struggle with their feelings on their own and their mothers to struggle with the building tension.

As Evan's background is revealed, these two close-knit families are ripped apart and everyone involved is forced to find a way to heal. Sherryl Woods did a wonderful job of dealing with a painful subject. Date rape is a sensitive issue and not one to be handled lightly.

The writing about the emotions involved was fabulous. I was impressed how all aspects of the emotional fallout were represented. Each character played a perfectly integral role reflecting the devastating effects of this crime. However, I found some of the characters were too stereotypical. They began to feel like cardboard forms of the emotions they were representing by the second half of the book. The friendships through the situation were unrealistic in my opinion. Grady developing a relationship with Emily was wildly inappropriate as well.

I understood the building attraction but to believe that this was going to be acted upon during the investigation was improper. Lastly, the resolution to the case and the resulting disappearance of Marcie, Caitlyn, Lauren and her roommate was a final disappointment leaving me unsatisfied concerning all of the fringe characters. Overall, I thought the book was a good read but it is not one I would recommend to all of my reading friends.

My review: I liked this book. First of all, I was familiar with the setting since my daughter lived in the area. So when I was reading the description of the setting, I could relate to it and say to myself, I know where that is.

This is an intense story that includes date rape, divorce, friendship, mental and verbal abuse to name just a few. The characters are strongly developed and you are made to feel like an observer in the room instead of a reader. Even the subject matter was tough to read about, it made me think of what I would do if I was in a similar situation. Thank goodness I never had to deal with them.

I had not previously had the opportunity to read any of Sherryl Woods books, so I was delighted to win a copy from Goodreads. The Dobbs and Carters are typical families with young children around the same age. The boys both love sports and are always together.

The kids I had not previously had the opportunity to read any of Sherryl Woods books, so I was delighted to win a copy from Goodreads. The kids are always at one house or the other and everything seems ideal. He is accused of rape and his career could be destroyed. His arrogant father sets out to prove his son is innocent and tries to ruin the girls reputation by spreading rumours. The strain in the friendship is sorely tested as doubts about Evan Carters innocence start to surface.

Things turn against Evan Carter, when the Dobbs daughter — Dani comes forward to say she also had been raped by Evan but was too ashamed to go to her parents. This is a prime example of how Evan sees how his father treats his mother and as he gets older starts to verbally abuse his mother as well Oct 28, Rema rated it really liked it Shelves: kickass-females , favorite-characters. This was just so freaking good.

I loved every single minute of it! Everything had just the perfect balance to it. I really appreciated the flashback that showed how Marcie's and Emily's friendship grew. It really set forth the tone of the book and how a horrible event changed so many lives in so many ways. There weren't all that many surprises. I mean, you can kind of figure out some of the plot and what was going to happen next but none of that took away from the actual reading experience.

I do This was just so freaking good. I do wish we could have read more about Josh and how things worked out for him. But it's not really a complaint. What makes this novel stand out especially were the bonds of friendship, love and family and how these ties prevailed under straining circumstances. The way relationships were portrayed were particularly eye opening for me.

Can I also state how much Evan and his behavior disgust me? He and his father, Ken, are horrible excuses for human beings. Their way of thinking, their behavior, and most of all, their awful treatment and utter disregard and respect for women is appalling.

They are worse than scum. It infuriates me that people like these two characters and worse exist. They are entirely shameful and pathetic excuses for men, much less humans. I'd call this a feel-good, easy-reader. However, in the end I love a tidy, wrapped-up book, and Sheryl Woods delivered. On a side note Her writing isn't cumbersome or pretentious. I'll be looking for more of her many books to read! As the Carters try to deal with the unthinkable, Emily discovers her daughter has been hiding a terrible secret…a secret that threatens the futures of both families.

Jun 30, Liberty Abbott-Sylvester rated it really liked it Recommends it for: anyone who loves an intense family drama. For more than ten years two women have been friends-Marci Carter, mother of two, married to a verbally abusive husband and Emily Dobbs, mother of two, married but alone due to a husband devoted to his job. Marcie and Emily have raised their children together, shared secrets, laughs and more.

But that friendship is about to be tested as Marci's son Evan is accused of date rape. Marci's husband Ken will do anything to prove his son's innocence, even if that means losing his wife and daughter. Emil For more than ten years two women have been friends-Marci Carter, mother of two, married to a verbally abusive husband and Emily Dobbs, mother of two, married but alone due to a husband devoted to his job.

Emily can't believe the accusations but when her own daughter begins acting strangely she begins to wonder if Evan has more than one possible victim. I didn't care for the 'romantic relationship' that is brought into the story as I feel it was an unnecessary part of the story. I plan on reading more of Sherryl Woods' books.

The meaning and origin of the expression: Mend fences

Where to start talking about this amazing book - I don't think Contemporary Romance is the correct genre. It is a so much deeper subject and characters then what I think of as a traditional romance novel. How to use a word that literally drives some people nuts. The awkward case of 'his or her'. Which of these things doesn't belong? Test your knowledge - and maybe learn something along the way. Build a city of skyscrapers—one synonym at a time.
